R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Eloy Reyes of New Mexico was a staunch advocate for the Hispanic community and a vigorous champion of education for Latino youth, and his untimely passing on January 14, 2002, at the age of 44 has left a great void in the hearts of his family and many friends; and WHEREAS, Born in Uvalde, Mr. Reyes moved to New Mexico as the market manager for Anheuser-Busch; he worked with Premier Distributing Company for nearly 20 years and served as a managing partner of the firm in Farmington and Santa Fe before becoming executive vice president, the position he held at the time of his death; and WHEREAS, Standing about six feet three inches tall and weighing 250 pounds, Mr. Reyes was a friendly person with an outgoing personality, a man whose imposing stature reflected the large way he lived life; whether he was conducting an auction, speaking to a group of people, or simply entering a room full of strangers, he made an impact on everyone present; and WHEREAS, In 1998, Mr. Reyes became president of the New Mexico Alliance for Hispanic Education, and in that capacity he helped the state's leading educational charity honor the brightest Hispanic scholars; Mr. Reyes spent many hours on the phone with community leaders around the state, urging them to build a firm foundation for New Mexico's future by supporting the education of its youth; and WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman also demonstrated his concern for his community through the presentation of various public awareness and education programs, such as those promoting responsible alcohol consumption and the use of designated drivers; and WHEREAS, In recognition of his tireless devotion to the Hispanic community, the Eloy Reyes Title V Scholarship for La Comunidad has been established for low-income Latino students at Albuquerque Vocational Technical Institute; the scholarship endowment has been funded by a $60,000 donation from Premier Distributing Company and a matching U.S. Department of Education Title V Endowment Challenge Grant; and WHEREAS, Through his spirited, unflagging efforts, Eloy Reyes touched the lives of countless individuals and contributed greatly to the building of a society that is enriched by the talents of all its citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay special tribute to the life of community leader Eloy Reyes; and, be it further RESOLVED, That when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Eloy Reyes.
