H.R. No. 257





R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly cause for celebration, and Lessie S. Joiner marked this significant milestone in her full and charitable life on June 26, 2005; and WHEREAS, From the invention of the jet engine to the creation of the Internet, Mrs. Joiner has witnessed many remarkable changes and marvels since her birth in 1905; and WHEREAS, This notable woman was the devoted wife of Promise Joiner and together they were blessed with 12 children; after her husband's death, Mrs. Joiner raised her family alone, providing for them by working as a seamstress and a quilt and rug maker; and WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Midlothian, Mrs. Joiner was an active member of the community's Church of God in Christ for many years, serving as Church Mother, playing guitar and piano during worship services, and baking and selling her famous lemon pies to raise money for the church; her generosity extended to her friends as well, and she offered free of charge a portion of her property to her close friend, the late Eula Staten, on which to build her home; today, Mrs. Joiner lives with her daughter, Ella Ruth Joiner-Turner, and her son-in-law, Elder Joe Turner, Sr., and also enjoys the company of her other children, Polly Sue Joiner-Washington and Tennessee Joiner-Phillips, as well as that of her extended family, which has grown to include 38 grandchildren, 88 great-grandchildren, and some 70 great-great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Throughout the past century, Lessie Joiner has enriched the lives of all who have known her, sharing with them her warmth, wisdom, and friendship, and it is a pleasure to join her loved ones in honoring her at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Lessie S. Joiner on her 100th birthday and extend to her heartfelt best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Joiner as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
