SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 4
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize The Jason Foundation, Incorporated, for the
outstanding work it does in the cause of suicide prevention among
young people; and
WHEREAS, Suicide has become the "Silent Epidemic" that is
claiming the lives of thousands of young people every year; it is
the third leading cause of death for young people ages 15 through
24 and is the second leading cause of death among college-age
students; and
WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's 2003 Youth Risk Behavioral Survey, one in every 10
youths in Texas stated that they had made a suicide attempt; and
WHEREAS, Suicide is a complex, multifaceted, biological,
sociological, psychological, and societal problem; many suicides
are preventable, and there is an urgent need for the development
of more effective suicide prevention programs; four out of five
young people who attempt suicide give clear warning signs
beforehand; and
WHEREAS, The mission of The Jason Foundation, Incorporated,
is to provide information, tools, and resources to students,
educators, youth workers, and parents that will enable them to
better detect at-risk behavior and guide them to local prevention
services; and
WHEREAS, This outstanding organization is opening an
office in Austin at The Oaks Treatment Center and is offering its
educational programs and seminars focused on awareness and
prevention of youth suicide in coordination with its national
clinical affiliate, Psychiatric Solutions, Incorporated; and
WHEREAS, A reception welcoming this dedicated group of
professionals to Austin is being held at the Four Seasons Hotel
on July 27, 2005; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend
The Jason Foundation, Incorporated, for its invaluable work in
the field of youth suicide prevention; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
this organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
