SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 10



	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 

recognize the significant cultural and historical contributions

of Starr County to the rich heritage of Texas; and

	WHEREAS, Originally surveyed by Spanish engineers in 

1767, Starr County was created in 1848 and was named after 

Dr. James Harper Starr of the Republic of Texas; and

	WHEREAS, Starr County is rich in natural resources, with 

abundant oil and gas reserves, and its farms are widely known for 

their fine cantaloupes and watermelons; and

	WHEREAS, Recreational attractions in Starr County draw people

from around the state and nation, including International Falcon 

Reservoir and Las Palomas State Wildlife Management Area; special 

events and activities in the county include the Starr County Fair 

and the Fourth of July Parade and Festival held in Rio Grande City;

and

	WHEREAS, This year, Starr County has been chosen as the site

for Operation Lone Star, a program sponsored by the Secretary of 

State's office, which takes place the week of July 25; during the 

week, Starr County governmental officials and members of the 

Texas National Guard, the United States Navy and the Marine 

Reserves will offer immunizations and health services to area 

children; these services play a highly important role in 

preparing children--particularly the indigent and uninsured--for

the upcoming school year; now, therefore, be it

	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 

79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend the 

citizens of Starr County for their contributions to our state and 

extend best wishes for much success to all who are participating 

in Operation Lone Star 2005; and, be it further

	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 

the county as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
