SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 17



	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 

recognize Jocelyn Levi Straus, who is being honored with the 

2005 Laura Bush Service and Education Award by the Republican 

Business Women of Bexar County; and

	WHEREAS, A longtime activist and philanthropist, 

Joci Straus has participated in Republican Party politics and 

San Antonio charitable organizations for over 40 years; and

	WHEREAS, Mrs. Straus began her political activities as 

chair of the Nixon Girls in 1960, and she has worked tirelessly 

for local, state, and national Republican candidates and causes 

ever since; and

	WHEREAS, Joci's dedication to service is manifest in her 

activities on behalf of a diverse group of organizations; she 

sits on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, the Cancer Therapy 

and Research Center, and Saint Mary's Hall School, and she is 

cochair of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy; and

	WHEREAS, For her outstanding community leadership and 

volunteerism, she was elected to the San Antonio Women's Hall 

of Fame in the Volunteer Service category and has received the 

Yellow Rose Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Association of 

San Antonio, the award for Outstanding Community Service from the 

American Heart Association, and the Tree of Life Award from the 

Jewish National Fund; and

	WHEREAS, She is a member of the Friends of the San Antonio 

Library, the Texas State Preservation Board, the Witte Museum 

Association, and The University of Texas Health Science Center 

at San Antonio Development Board; now, therefore, be it

	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 

79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend 

Jocelyn Levi Straus for her invaluable contributions to the 

San Antonio community and to our state and congratulate her on 

receiving the 2005 Laura Bush Service and Education Award; and, 

be it further

	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 

her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
