SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 37
In Memory
of
Dr. Richard Henry Carnahan
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Dr. Richard Henry Carnahan,
who died recently at the age of 93; and
WHEREAS, Born March 12, 1912, in Big Wells, Texas,
Dick Carnahan grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Main Avenue
High School in 1930; he and his brothers worked at the family drug
store, and athletics played an important role in his life as a
young man; and
WHEREAS, Dick attended Saint Mary's University, and in
1935, he graduated as a doctor of dental surgery from the
Baylor University College of Dentistry; he joined the United States
Army Reserve, and in 1937 he became a second lieutenant in the
regular Army Dental Corps; and
WHEREAS, In 1940, he met First Lieutenant Adele Cherry, a
nurse anesthetist, in Hot Springs, Arkansas; they were wed on
November 29, 1940, and began a marriage full of devotion, love,
and respect that would last 65 years, until Adele's death one
week prior to Dr. Carnahan's; and
WHEREAS, When the United States joined the war in Europe,
Mr. Carnahan, then a major, was deployed in the first support convoy
to London, and he was among the first recipients of the Legion of
Merit in the United Kingdom; following the Normandy Invasion, his
medical unit was deployed to France and traveled through Europe
and back to London; ultimately, Lieutenant Colonel Carnahan
became chief of dental surgery at Fort Sam Houston; and
WHEREAS, Dick left the service in 1946 to begin his private
practice of dentistry in San Antonio, where he practiced for 55
years; he also served as the president of the San Antonio District
Dental Society; and
WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Carnahan were founding members of
Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, and they enjoyed their
memberships in the Supper Club, the Oak Hills Country Club, and
Club Giraud; and
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, Dick
gave generously of himself to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and
valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, Dick Carnahan lived his life to the fullest and
was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves
behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Dr. Richard Henry Carnahan:
his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard "Corky" Carnahan, Jr.,
and Chrissie; his daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and
Campbell Hawthorne and Peggy and Larry Taylor; and his seven
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of Dr. Richard Henry Carnahan.
