SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 39
In Memory
of
George Herman Wenglein
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of George Herman Wenglein,
who died April 12, 2005, at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, Born January 11, 1917, in Ukiah, California, to
Swiss immigrant parents, George attended San Jose State College,
where he was the 1936 Junior Olympic Pacific Coast Wrestling
Champion; in 1937, he joined his brother-in-law Robert Luby in
Dallas to work with Luby's Cafeterias, and a temporary summer job
eventually evolved into a 63-year career; and
WHEREAS, He served his country during World War II in the
United States Navy as a divebomber pilot assigned to the carriers
USS YorktownII and USS Franklin; he flew numerous missions and
received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart
during his six years of service; and
WHEREAS, George returned to Luby's Cafeterias after the war
and opened the organization's second cafeteria in San Antonio;
his responsibilities grew with the company, and he served as
president and chief executive officer from 1972 until 1982, when
he was elected chairman, a position he held until 1988; and
WHEREAS, Under George's leadership, Luby's grew from a
small local business with seven cafeterias to a publicly traded
company with over 200 cafeterias in 11 states; he continued to
serve on the board of directors until 2001; and
WHEREAS, George contributed to the life of his community
through his participation in civic and charitable organizations;
he served on the board of the Northeast Independent School
District and as a director of the National Bank of Fort Sam Houston,
and he was a member of the Texas Restaurant Association; and
WHEREAS, George gave generously of himself to others, and
his warmth and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who
knew him; a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, George
leaves behind memories that will be treasured by his family and
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of George Herman Wenglein:
his wife of 49 years, Phyllis; his daughters and sons-in-law,
Teri Wenglein-Callender and Dr. David Callender and
Ann Wenglein-Brawner and Rick Brawner; his son and
daughter-in-law, George and Bari Wenglein; his sisters,
Hulda Weger, Alice Southerland, and Pat Goudge; and his five
grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of George Herman Wenglein.
