SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 42
In Memory
of
Vaughan Benjamin Meyer
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of San Antonio in mourning the loss of noted philanthropist and
businessman Vaughan Benjamin Meyer, who died recently at the age
of 84; and
WHEREAS, Born in Eagle Pass on December 13, 1920, to
Genevieve Curtis Vaughan Meyer and Otto Charles Meyer,
Vaughan Benjamin Meyer attended school in Eagle Pass and spent
summers on the family ranch in Mexico; and
WHEREAS, He graduated from Rice University with a degree
in mechanical engineering in 1941 and began graduate studies at
California Institute of Technology; he joined the Navy during
World War II and became a specialist in military weaponry; and
WHEREAS, In 1946, Vaughan moved to San Antonio and began a
successful career in the lumber industry, branching out later
into land development and home building; he sold his last
business in 2000 after having developed some 1,000 properties
in Eagle Pass; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime, Vaughan Meyer was active
in numerous charitable causes, foundations, and educational
institutions; he was a founding member of the board of governors
of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research and joined
other family members in endowing three chairs at the Baylor
College of Medicine; he also provided initial funding for a
professorship in professional ethics at Saint Mary's University;
and
WHEREAS, He was a member of the governing board of the
Argyle Club for 45 years and served as its president for five
terms; he was a director of the Witte Museum, the San Antonio
Museum of Art, and the Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children,
and he served several terms as chairman of development and
president of the board of directors of Saint Mary's Hall and
co-authored a history of the institution; and
WHEREAS, A highly esteemed resident of San Antonio,
Vaughan Meyer was well known in the community for his generosity
and service to others; he loved his dogs, and he enjoyed swimming,
reading, traveling, and the pursuit of genealogy; and
WHEREAS, Vaughan Meyer was a devoted husband, father, and
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Vaughan Benjamin Meyer: his
wife, Anne de Rossette Orrison Meyer; his daughters and son-in-law,
Beverly Vaughan Meyer and Catherine Howard Meyer Lange and her
husband, Rich; and his grandson, Casey Abbott Lange; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
do so in memory of Vaughan Benjamin Meyer.
