SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 43
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize San Gabriel Christian Church on the occasion of the dedication of its official Texas Historical Marker on August 7, 2005, and on its 151st anniversary of service to the communities of Milam County; and WHEREAS, Early institutions in the area that is Milam County included three 18th-century Spanish missions and a presidio; in 1835, the Mexican government granted a league of land to Abigail McLennan Fokes; on this land, San Gabriel Christian Church would later be located at three different sites; and WHEREAS, In the 1840s, a group of Christians began worshipping in private homes in the area; however, the church's first documented baptism was in 1854; and WHEREAS, The San Gabriel Christian Church was formally organized in 1859, and it is now recognized as the oldest continuous ministry in Milam County; its first sanctuary was built in 1884, but due to frequent floods, the congregation moved to a new sanctuary across the river; later, members of the congregation constructed the third and present house of worship in 1924; and WHEREAS, The church has ministered faithfully to the needs of many Christians and has been a source of strength for its members during their hardships and in times of bereavement; its recognition by the Texas Historical Commission with a historic marker will assure its preservation for future generations; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend congratulations to the clergy and members of San Gabriel Christian Church on the occasion of the dedication of its official Texas Historical Marker and extend to all best wishes for a memorable event; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the church as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
