SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 89
In Memory
of
William E. Sharp
WHEREAS, The Texas Senate joins the citizens of San Antonio
in mourning the loss of Colonel William E. "Gene" Sharp, who
recently died at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, Born November 18, 1918, in Walla Walla, Washington,
Gene was a premedical student at Washington State University when
he met Virginia "Scottie" Scott and proposed to her two weeks
later; they were married for 63 years; and
WHEREAS, While attending college, Gene was a member of
Delta Upsilon fraternity and the premedical honor society, and he
also received a commercial pilot's license; two weeks after Gene
completed his flight training as a United States Army Air Corps
cadet, Pearl Harbor was bombed; and
WHEREAS, Gene became a pilot instructor; his career in the
United States Air Force spanned almost 30 years, and he and
Scottie were stationed around the world on bases in Greenland,
Morocco, and Peru; and
WHEREAS, During his military career, Gene earned the
Peruvian Air Cross and the Legion of Merit for exemplary service
on the Joint Chiefs of Staff; he was deputy commander of the
316th Air Division in northern Africa, and he was deputy chief of
staff for plans of the Headquarters Air Training Command at
Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, Following his retirement to Shavano Park in 1970,
Gene was elected mayor as a write-in candidate and served from
1975 until 1983; during his tenure, he served as chair of the
Bexar County Council of Mayors and was responsible for
transportation infrastructure in and around San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, A man of courage and compassion, Gene gave
generously of himself to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and
valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Gene
leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Gene Sharp: his son and
daughter-in-law, Dennis and Jane Sharp; his daughter and
son-in-law, Sarah-Lynne "Susie" and Jean-Marie Le Canu; and
his nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of sincere sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of William E. Sharp.
