SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 90
In Memory
of
Tom H. Davis III
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Tom H. Davis III, who died August 1, 2005, at the age of 79; and WHEREAS, A fourth-generation Texan, Tom Davis was born in Austin on October 6, 1925; after he graduated from Austin High School he joined the United States Navy Air Corps, where he learned to fly in World War II; and WHEREAS, Tom graduated from The University of Texas and The University of Texas School of Law; Tom served as a briefing attorney for the Texas Supreme Court; when the Korean War began, he was called back to active duty as a Marine pilot; he flew 103 combat missions in Korea and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and 10 air medals; and WHEREAS, He practiced law with former United States Senator Ralph W. Yarborough and, in 1959, founded Byrd & Davis law firm, which became Byrd, Davis and Eisenberg; in 1993, he founded the Slack & Davis law firm, where he practiced until his retirement in 1999; during his career, he combined his love of flying with his love of the law and became a pioneer in aviation law and was nationally recognized for his work; and WHEREAS, Tom earned numerous state and national legal honors during his career; he served as president for the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, as director of the State Bar of Texas, and as a member of the Supreme Court of Texas Advisory Committee; in 2003, the Travis County Bar Association honored him with a Distinguished Lawyer Award; and WHEREAS, He loved sports, and he played football while in the service and at The University of Texas; he was also a fast-pitch softball player, a golfer, and a loyal follower of University of Texas football; and WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Tom H. Davis III: his wife of 56 years, Hattie Davis; his sons and daughters-in-law, Don W. and Debbie Davis and Mike and Susan Davis; his grandson, Ty Davis; and his brother, Chris Cowing; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Tom H. Davis III.
