SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 108
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to pay tribute to Winifred Sophie Kuehl Russell on the grand occasion of her 100th birthday on August 25, 2005; and WHEREAS, Winifred Sophie Kuehl was born into a German-speaking family in DeWitt County in 1905 and had to learn to speak English before going to public schools in Cuero; and WHEREAS, She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Victoria Junior College, and Southwest Texas State University; she taught school in Green DeWitt, New County Line, Roseville, Mission Valley, Arneckeville, and Cuero, and she worked in a gift shop in Cuero during summer vacations; and WHEREAS, When Winifred married Clarence A. Russell on November 2, 1927, in Grace Episcopal Church, it was the first wedding ceremony performed by the Reverend Everett H. Jones; and WHEREAS, Winifred and Clarence moved to Victoria, where Clarence was employed, and where her son, Clarence A. Russell, Jr., was born on September 22, 1928; the couple returned to Cuero after Clarence bought a business there, and they lived in the same home in which Winifred had grown up; and WHEREAS, Working together, the couple survived the Great Depression, but the piano which Winifred had learned to play as a child had to be sold to help support the family; during World War II, Winifred did volunteer work with the Red Cross; and WHEREAS, After her husband died in 1973, Winifred remained in the family home for several years and then moved to San Antonio, where her son and his family lived; she lived in Walnut Manor for 25 years before a fall convinced her to move to a nursing home; she is now a resident of Regent Care at Medical Center; and WHEREAS, Winifred is beloved by her seven grandchildren, her eight great-grandchildren, and her great-great-grandchild; she is noted for her charm, her generosity of spirit, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby recognize Winifred Kuehl Russell as a treasured citizen of this state and extend to her best wishes on her 100th birthday; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
