SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 109
In Memory
of
John R Shaw
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of John R Shaw, who
died August 4, 2005, at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, John R Shaw was born on September 20, 1924,
and lived his entire life in San Antonio; he graduated from
Thomas Jefferson High School in 1942, where he was a popular
student and a member of the Senate Club and the Phosphor Society;
he was a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and
The University of Texas School of Law; he began his law practice
in 1949; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, John R was a lifetime member
and ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church; he gave
generously of his time and energy to numerous organizations in
the San Antonio community and served on the board of directors
and as legal adviser for the Salvation Army, which honored him
with its William F. Booth Award and the "Others" Award, the
highest award given to a civilian for outstanding service; and
WHEREAS, Among the many organizations that benefited from
John R's counsel and leadership were the Alamo Kiwanis Club,
Morningside Manor, Incorporated, Amigos de Las Americas
International, the Mission Road Foundation and Development
Center, the Jackson-Todd Cancer Foundation, the Bledsoe Memorial
Foundation, and the March of Dimes; and
WHEREAS, In addition to an exemplary 57-year career in law,
John R had several years of distinguished service in the
United States military as a fighter pilot with the United States
Army Fifth Air Force 136th Fighter Bomber Wing in World War II and
again during the Korean War, when he earned fame for flying over
100 missions in enemy territory; and
WHEREAS, A highly esteemed gentleman and prominent
attorney, John R Shaw was renowned for his tireless service in
pro bono work and humanitarian matters; he lived an exemplary
life, and he will long be remembered for his wisdom, warmth, and
valued counsel by all who knew him; and
WHEREAS, John R Shaw lived his life to the fullest and was a
devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind
memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of John R Shaw: his wife of 60
years, Amelie Rutherford Shaw; his daughter, Christi Shaw Moorman;
his cousin, Philip Norton Hudson; and his six grandchildren; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of John R Shaw.
