SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 123
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Bryan Independent School District on the occasion of its 125th anniversary; and WHEREAS, On October 29, 1877, the City of Bryan took a progressive step in an era of private schools and voted to establish a free public school; and WHEREAS, The cornerstone for the new school was laid in 1879 by the president of Texas A&M University, Thomas S. Gathright, and local masons, and classes opened for students in the fall of 1880; Percy Pennybacker served as principal, and the school consisted of only seven grades; and WHEREAS, Through the years, the Bryan Independent School District has grown and been a vital part of the Bryan community as it has prepared countless students for their lives as productive members of society; and WHEREAS, The school district today has over 14,000 students in 16 elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school; construction will soon begin on a second high school and a fourth middle school; and WHEREAS, In honor of the district's 125th anniversary, a celebration is being held on October 22 at Heritage Park, adjacent to the site of the original school; the event will include historical displays, music, food, and an antique car show; descendants of the first Bryan High School graduates will participate in a ceremonial groundbreaking for the district's new high school; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend the Bryan Independent School District for 125 years of outstanding service to the community of Bryan; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of the district's 125th anniversary.
