SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 130
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Sybil Haydel Morial on the occasion of her retirement
from Xavier University of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, Sybil Morial has worked to advance civil rights
and has shown an unwavering commitment to improving the quality
of life in New Orleans; and
WHEREAS, After receiving a bachelor's degree and a master's
degree in education from Boston University, Sybil returned home
to New Orleans and became involved in the emerging civil rights
movement; and
WHEREAS, She energetically worked for numerous
organizations, including the Urban League of Greater New Orleans
and the League of Women Voters; she was the founder of the
Louisiana League of Good Government, a nonpartisan, interracial
women's organization devoted to guaranteeing civil liberties and
full participation in government for all Louisiana citizens; and
WHEREAS, Sybil has been a part of the administrative staff
of Xavier University for 26 years; she began as director of
special services, next became an associate dean of the Drexel
Center, and finally served as associate vice president for
external affairs; and
WHEREAS, Her work at the university, the Amistad Research
Center, and other organizations has earned her awards and
accolades, including the Torch of Liberty Award from the
Anti-Defamation League, the Links' Woman of the Year award, and
the Weiss Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews
and many others; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Sybil Morial has been an
inspiration and a role model for the students at Xavier University,
and she will be greatly missed by her colleagues; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend Sybil
Haydel Morial for her years of service to Xavier University of
Louisiana and extend to her best wishes for the retirement years
ahead; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
