CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Since the Marine Corps' creation by the Continental
Congress in 1775, the Corps has served valiantly in combat and
supportive military roles in every conflict in which the United
States has been involved since the Revolutionary War, including the
two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other
international conflicts, distinguishing itself as an integral part
of the United States armed forces; and
WHEREAS, Acting under its own command structure within the
Department of the Navy, the United States Marine Corps plays a
crucial role in protecting national security by maintaining ready
expeditionary forces, amphibious and integrated air and ground
units for combat and contingency operations, protecting United
States embassies around the world, and providing crucial support in
disaster relief operations, but the name of the Department of the
Navy and the title of its secretary do not reflect the Corps'
significant role within the department or the individual Marines'
traditional pride as members of the Corps in their service and
sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, The Marine Corps and the Navy work as two distinct
and valuable members of a partnership within the Department of the
Navy by employing a cooperative operational support structure while
maintaining their own discrete missions, and changing the name of
the Department of the Navy to include the name of the Marine Corps
would accurately represent the importance of the Marine Corps in
the unique partnership of these two historically proud branches of
the United States military; and
WHEREAS, Changing the name of the Department of the Navy to
the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps and the title of the
Secretary of the Navy to Secretary of the Navy and Marine Corps
would reflect the crucial role the Marine Corps plays in protecting
national security and honor the service and sacrifice of the men and
women who risk their lives on a daily basis, proudly wearing the
Marine Corps uniform as members of the United States military; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
3rd Called Session, hereby respectfully urge the Congress of the
United States to pass legislation redesignating the Department of
the Navy as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps and
redesignating the Secretary of the Navy as the Secretary of the Navy
and Marine Corps; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward official
copies of this resolution to the president of the United States, to
the speaker of the house of representatives and the president of the
senate of the United States Congress, and to all the members of the
Texas delegation to the congress with the request that this
resolution be officially entered in the Congressional Record as a
memorial to the Congress of the United States of America.
