CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Nancy Schunke of Lubbock ISD has been accorded a great honor with her receipt of a 2005 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching; and WHEREAS, The nation's most prestigious prize for math and science educators, this award pays tribute to outstanding teachers, recognizing them for their contributions in the classroom and to the profession; Ms. Schunke is one of only two teachers in Texas selected for this year's honor and, like the other honorees, she will receive a $10,000 grant from the National Science Foundation; and WHEREAS, This talented educator was nominated for the award by faculty members at Texas Tech University for her instrumental work in developing the school's Pre-College Engineering Academy and a LEGO robotics workshop to be used in the program; in addition, she aligned components of the groundbreaking academy with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills curriculum requirements and assisted in the creation of a pre-engineering resource guide for her fellow teachers; and WHEREAS, A member of the Dunbar Math and Science Academy faculty, where she is a teacher of science and engineering for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades as well as a magnet program specialist, Ms. Schunke has previously been named 2005-2006 Teacher of the Year by The Lubbock Avalanche Journal; and WHEREAS, Nancy Schunke has brought great honor to her school and to her community with her receipt of this important award, and the State of Texas is indeed fortunate to have educators like her preparing young Texans for the future; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Nancy Schunke on winning a 2005 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and extend to her best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Schunke as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
