H.C.R. No. 45
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The passing of Sam L. Huggins of Paris on May 1,
2006, at the age of 85, brings tremendous sadness to all those who
were fortunate enough to have shared in his love and friendship; and
WHEREAS, After growing up in Lamar County, where he
participated in a wide range of sports, Mr. Huggins entered World
War II on June 17, 1942, as part of the U.S. Army's 8th Special
Service Unit; serving with distinction in the southern Philippines,
Fiji Islands, New Hebrides, and other South Pacific theaters, he
was awarded a number of decorations, including the American Theater
Campaign medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign medal with one
Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation medal with one Bronze Star,
the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Ribbon I Service Stripe, and
five overseas service bars; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Huggins returned from the war to the Fort Sam
Houston Separation Center on December 27, 1945, and married the
former Gwendolyn Hutchings on February 10, 1946; for 60 years, the
couple made their home in Paris, where he owned and operated his own
businesses and served his community as a member of the Paris Lions
Club and president of the United Way; and
WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father and respected civic
leader, Mr. Huggins will be deeply missed, but his spirit will
continue to shine brightly in the hearts of his loved ones; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Sam L. Huggins
and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
wife, Gwendolyn Huggins; to his son, Michael Huggins; to his
brother, Earl Huggins; to his nieces and nephews, Lanny, Gary, and
Mickey Huggins, Phillip, Rebecca, and Bobby Huggins, Kay Boren and
Ballard Ray Boren, and Cindy Powell and her husband, Rhett, and
their son, Austin Powell; to his sisters-in-law, Rebecca Huggins,
Louise Huggins, and Margie Doyle; and to his other relatives and
friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
Sam L. Huggins.
