H.C.R. No. 46
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Family and friends of Phillip Zachary "Foots"
Rutherford of Roxton were deeply saddened by his death on April 30,
2006, at the age of 97; and
WHEREAS, Born on November 4, 1908, in Petty, Mr. Rutherford
attended public schools in Petty; at the age of 13, he bought and
overhauled a 1912 two-cylinder Maxwell and launched a lifelong
career as an auto mechanic; he worked as a mechanic for Lamar County
Precinct No. 2 for 14 years before going into business for himself
in Petty and then running the Roxton Garage from 1957 to 1982; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rutherford was the oldest member of the Roxton
Methodist Church and the great-grandson of Lamar County's first
elected judge, John A. Rutherford; he was a raconteur, known far and
wide for his tales of the Great Depression, his youthful
shenanigans, and colorful friends; and
WHEREAS, With the death of this notable Texan, the Roxton
community has lost a link to its past, but memories of many happy
times and spirited stories will live on in the hearts of all who
loved him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Phillip
Zachary "Foots" Rutherford and extend sincere sympathy to the
members of his family: to his son, Phillip R. Rutherford and his
wife, Lou Carolyn; to his grandsons, Phillip Terrell Rutherford and
Kristopher Paul Rutherford and his wife, Karen; to his three
great-grandchildren, Kristianna, Klay, and Kolton; to his sister,
Mary Helen Shelton; to his brother, Jack Rutherford; and to his many
other relatives and friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
Phillip Zachary Rutherford.
