CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Members of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors and countless other dedicated civic volunteers
helped make the Kerr County Sesquicentennial celebration from April
7 to April 9, 2006, an outstanding success; and
WHEREAS, In November 2005, former Mayor Joe Herring, Jr.,
began soliciting support from businesses and visiting with local
residents about the event; Kerr County historian Clarabelle
Snodgrass gave useful input, recalling the 1956 centennial parade
when her father was the parade marshall, and David Smith, graphic
design professor at Schreiner University, shared ideas about
organizing a competition to design a Kerr 150 logo and a
commemorative coin; and
WHEREAS, The steering committee included Linda Somerville of
Security State Bank and Trust, who coordinated the Friday evening
event; Sue Steele of Bank of the Hills and Candi Behrens of the Kerr
County Fair Association, who coordinated the 150th anniversary
parade on Saturday; the Reverend Stockton Williams, Jr., of St.
Peter's Episcopal Church, who coordinated the memorial service on
Sunday; and Joe Benham, who wrote, produced, and submitted press
releases; many other citizens also donated time and energy, and
numerous sponsors helped defray the cost; and
WHEREAS, Kicking off the festivities, Governor Rick Perry
offered a proclamation, and then performers, including Native
American dancers, the Mount Olive Baptist Church choir, a mariachi
band, the Seven Dutchmen Orchestra, and country music singer
Darrell McCall, showcased the county's cultural heritage; more than
125 groups participated in the parade on Saturday, making it the
largest in Kerr County history, and Saturday evening included
performances by Reid Wells and Segovia 1862, the Josh Grider Band,
and country music star Gary P. Nunn; a fireworks display over the
Guadalupe River concluded the day's events; the memorial service on
Sunday included the Schreiner University choir and Dr. Sam Junkin
as the guest speaker; and
WHEREAS, The Kerr County Sesquicentennial will long be
remembered as a dynamic, joyful celebration, thanks to the
exceptional efforts, talents, and skills of many local citizens;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
3rd Called Session, hereby commend the citizens of Kerr County on
their successful sesquicentennial celebration and extend to them
best wishes for the future.
