R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Well-known radio and television personality Anthony
Otis Garrett of Dallas passed away on March 27, 2006, at the age of
68, and with his death a colorful life has drawn to a close; and
WHEREAS, Born on July 31, 1937, in Los Angeles, Tony Garrett
grew up in a show-business family and was raised in Dallas; in 1956,
he joined the Navy, and while in the service, he studied electronics
and developed a passion for radio that would set the stage for a
career in broadcast journalism; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Garrett got his start in radio in Santa Barbara,
but by the 1960s, had returned to Dallas and become the host of the
popular program, Music 'Til Dawn; he later served as the program
manager of the public radio station, KERA-FM, and hosted its
Morning Magazine; and
WHEREAS, This multitalented gentleman expanded his career
into television, serving as the weekend weatherman for KRLD-TV and
narrating the Peabody Award-winning documentary, A Thirst in the
Garden; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Garrett also maintained a lively interest in
public affairs and his involvement ranged from exploring criminal
justice and media access issues to working for local and state
officeholders in such capacities as campaign coordinator, press
secretary, and political aide; and
WHEREAS, Tony Garrett will long be remembered as an
intelligent, articulate man who used his experience as a skilled
communicator to promote and support the ideas and people in which he
believed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Anthony Otis Garrett and extend sincere sympathy to the members of
his family: to his daughters, Barbara Angelopolus, Devon Valderas
and her husband, Luis, Doran Medley, Bronwyn Ratliff and her
husband, Don, and Elizabeth Garrett; to his sister, Judith
Colgrove; to his grandchildren, Amber Carrera and Dallas Amos; to
his great-grandchild, Briana; and to his other relatives and
friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Anthony
Otis Garrett.
