R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Bedford resident Basil McDaniel celebrated his 80th
birthday on July 13, 2005, with no plans to retire from the
profession he clearly loves; and
WHEREAS, The esteemed co-owner of Hair Haven, Mr. McDaniel
has been cutting and styling hair for the better part of eight
decades; licensed at the age of 19, he earned money cutting hair
while earning a bachelor's degree in speech and drama at the
University of Oklahoma; and
WHEREAS, Following college, Mr. McDaniel worked as a
hairdresser and also taught continuing education classes; he
interrupted his civilian career to serve in the armed forces and saw
action in the Korean War before returning to Oklahoma City in 1951;
and
WHEREAS, A talented stylist, he won the state and national
championships of the Hairdressers and Cosmetology Association in
1963 and was soon thereafter asked to be the stylist for a new
Motown Records supergroup, the Supremes; and
WHEREAS, In 1969, after six years of traveling with the
rhythm-and-blues hit-makers, Mr. McDaniel was lured out of an early
retirement by an official from the Miss Texas pageant; a year later,
the stars aligned once again as he became the stylist for Phyllis
George, the reigning Miss Dallas and the future Miss America; and
WHEREAS, Held in warm regard and affection for his longtime
work with the Miss Northeast Tarrant Scholarship Organization and
the Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant, Basil McDaniel has made many
good friends and accumulated countless fond memories over the
years, and he remains an inspiration to all who know him; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Basil
McDaniel on his 80th birthday and extend best wishes to him for
continued happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. McDaniel as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
