H.R. No. 67 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Johnny Mankin of Woodway is retiring from his position as president of the Waco division of Time Warner Cable on April 21, 2006, bringing to a close an exceptional career in the cable industry that has spanned nearly five decades; and WHEREAS, Mr. Mankin is responsible for cable systems serving approximately 110,000 subscribers throughout Waco, Temple, Belton, Killeen, and Ft. Hood, and under his outstanding leadership, the Waco division has earned a host of awards, including the Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, the Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics from the Better Business Bureau, and the Philanthropic Business of the Year from the Association of Fundraising Professionals; moreover, his group has earned several Beacon Awards from the Cable Television Public Affairs Association for community outreach and education initiatives; and WHEREAS, A native of Tyler, Mr. Mankin grew up in the cable industry, helping his father manage the second cable system ever built in Texas; he went on to manage systems in Louisiana and Oklahoma before his move to Waco in 1976; and WHEREAS, Despite his many obligations, Mr. Mankin has always managed to give of his time and talents to benefit local and statewide professional and civic organizations; a recipient of the Silver Bridge Award from the Central Texas Public Relations Society of America, he is a former board president of the Texas Cable TV Association and the Better Business Bureau, and a board committee chair and treasurer for the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, a former chair of the Waco Brazos Club, Waco Boys & Girls Club, and Waco Crimestoppers, and a former president of the Baylor/Waco Foundation; he has further distinguished himself on the boards of the Tadpole Foundation, Learning Disabilities of McLennan County, Providence Health Center, Baylor Bear Club, and the Behavioral Health Institute; moreover, Mr. Mankin has benefited his community as a Woodway city councilman, a Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church, and an organizer of the Great Texas Raft Race; and WHEREAS, Johnny Mankin has set a sterling example of professional success and community involvement to which all may aspire, and he may reflect with great pride on his many achievements as he prepares to embark on a well-deserved retirement; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Johnny Mankin on his retirement as president of the Waco division of Time Warner Cable and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Mankin as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
