R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The malignant consummation of centuries-old hatred
and intolerance, the genocidal horror known as the Holocaust will
forever stain the history of humankind; and
WHEREAS, The Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic
persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and
its collaborators between 1933 and 1945; during those years, six
million Jews, the primary victims of the Holocaust, were murdered;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, Romanies, the handicapped, and Poles
were targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or
national reasons; millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah's
Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, and political dissidents, also
suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny; and
WHEREAS, The history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity
to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies,
and governments and on the need for respect for all peoples; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, the United States Congress created the
United States Holocaust Memorial Council and charged it with
leading nationwide Holocaust commemorations and educational
programs; each year, the council designates an eight-day period as
the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust; this year,
the Days of Remembrance are being observed from Sunday, April 23,
2006, through Sunday, April 30, 2006, a span that includes the
International Day of Remembrance, Yom Hashoah, on April 25; and
WHEREAS, We, the people of the State of Texas, should always
remember the events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against
hatred, persecution, and tyranny, while rededicating ourselves to
the principle of individual freedom in a just society; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby recognize April 23-30,
2006, as the Days of Remembrance, in memory of the victims of the
Holocaust, in honor of the survivors, and in tribute to the rescuers
and liberators, and encourage all Texans to overcome intolerance
and indifference through learning and remembrance.
