H.R. No. 71 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Hollis Brashear has dedicated 14 years to the growth and prosperity of the Dallas Independent School District through his service as a school board trustee; and WHEREAS, Mr. Brashear has enjoyed an accomplished tenure on the board; elected in 1992, he has distinguished himself as the group's vice president and president, demonstrating invaluable leadership over the course of his terms; and WHEREAS, A graduate of DISD's Lincoln High School, Mr. Brashear earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Prairie View A&M University and his master's from Oklahoma State University and had a notable 21-year career in the military; and WHEREAS, Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mr. Brashear commanded a combat engineer company near the demilitarized zone in Korea and a construction engineer company in France; during the Vietnam War, he served as an engineering planning officer and as an advisor to the South Vietnamese engineer battalion, earning two bronze star medals for his efforts; and WHEREAS, This accomplished Texan returned to his hometown of Dallas after his retirement from the army in 1979; since that time, he has served as director of Building Services Department for the City of Dallas, managed the Dallas office of Williams, Russell, and Johnson engineering firm, and founded HNB Consulting Engineers; and WHEREAS, In addition to his work with the school board, Mr. Brashear has lent his time and talents to Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce, The University of Texas at Dallas development board, Dallas County Appraisal District board, and the Dallas Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, which he served as president; he is also a member of the board of elders of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship; and WHEREAS, Mr. Brashear's many contributions have earned him a host of accolades, including the 2000 Community Service Award from the National Alliance of Black Educators, the 1999 Volunteerism Award from the Southeast Dallas Business Women's Club, the 1999 Education Award from Phi Delta Kappa, and the 1998 Man of the Year Award from the North Texas Conference of AME Church, to name but a few; and WHEREAS, The participation of concerned citizens is vital to the success of our state's public schools, and Hollis Brashear, through his dedicated work as a member of the school board, has set an inspiring example for all Texans and made a positive difference in the lives of countless people; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Hollis Brashear for his years of service to the Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees and extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Brashear as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
