R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In 2006, the proud residents of Live Oak County are celebrating the auspicious occasion of their county's sesquicentennial; and WHEREAS, Graced by the waters of the Nueces River and its tributaries, this section of the inland coastal plain of South Texas was once inhabited by the Coahuiltecans, the Comanche, and the Lipan Apache as well as other, more ancient, Native American groups; in the 1800s, ranchers of Spanish and Irish descent settled in the area, where they witnessed the passing of the warring armies during the Texas Revolution and defended their homesteads against fugitive outlaws and American Indian raiders in the tumultuous frontier era of the mid-1800s; and WHEREAS, Under the branches of the majestic Charter Oak at Gussettville, citizens of the region drew up a petition requesting the formation of Live Oak County in 1856, and Oakville was named the county seat; in 1919 that honor passed to George West, a town founded by the famous Texas cattleman for whom it was named; and WHEREAS, The ranchers and farmers of the county's past have seen their noble professions carried into the present day, with fields of grain, cotton, and livestock providing both tranquil beauty and essential income; beneath the soil, reserves of oil and natural gas have also been a hallmark of Live Oak County, and the refining of these raw materials into usable energy resources continues to be one of the area's most important industries; and WHEREAS, The refreshing waters of the county's rivers have been harnessed to form two lakes, Choke Canyon Reservoir and Lake Corpus Christi, and Live Oak County has become a favorite destination of anglers and water-sports enthusiasts, while its ample wildlife draw hunters from throughout Texas and other parts of the United States; and WHEREAS, A mixture of rich traditions and forward-looking optimism have made this region into a vibrant crossroads of South Texas and an important and attractive part of the Lone Star State, and it is indeed a privilege to join its residents as they observe the 150th anniversary of the county's founding; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby recognize the sesquicentennial of Live Oak County and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes for a happy and prosperous future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Live Oak County as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
