R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Shirley West and her Buddy, the Honorable G. E. West, marked a momentous occasion in their lives with the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary on March 22, 2006; and WHEREAS, From childhood classmates to study partners in high school, the Wests' early years together always seemed to revolve around education; married in Odessa on March 22, 1956, the newlyweds moved to Abilene in 1957 in order for Representative West to attend Hardin-Simmons University; Mrs. West worked for Stanolind Oil and Representative West for Pan American while he was a student; later in his career, he earned a bachelor of business administration degree from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin; and WHEREAS, Following the birth of the couple's first child, Representative West joined the staff of Eagle Fishing Tool and the Wests moved to Andrews, where "Gone Fishing" held new meaning until their return to Odessa in 1961; three years later, he resumed his career with Pan American, which subsequently became Amoco, and he is now retired from a notable 30-year career with that company; and WHEREAS, First elected to the Texas Legislature in 1992, this distinguished Texan keeps coming back for more to the delight of his colleagues and constituents alike; when he isn't visiting Central Texas, Representative West spends his free time back in Odessa attending church, working around his house, and playing with his grandchildren; hunting season finds him in the field with friends and his grandsons, and he also loves to read, especially works on American and Texas history; and WHEREAS, For many years, Shirley West was a stay-at-home mother, and after nurturing her lively brood through their youth, she took the business world by storm and launched a successful career in real estate; and WHEREAS, Today, leading the Wests' considerable fan club are their children and their spouses, Richie West, Lori and Wade Bennington, and Ami and Scott Satterwhite, and their grandchildren, Kelsee and Shelby West, Baylee Bennington, and Scotty, Lexi, Landon, and Laci Satterwhite; and WHEREAS, After 50 years of marriage, the ties of affection and respect that bind this fortunate pair together have only grown deeper and stronger; as they savor the richness of the past five decades, their family and friends give thanks for the joyful example of their enduring union; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate the Honorable Buddy West and Shirley West on their golden wedding anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued happiness and good fortune; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Representative and Mrs. West as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
