H.R. No. 151


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and meaningful accomplishments may help to comfort the family and friends of Dr. Charles A. Berry, Jr., of Grambling, Louisiana, who passed away on March 20, 2006, at the age of 83; and WHEREAS, Dr. Berry, son of the cofounder of Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, earned his bachelor's degree from the school in 1942, and went on to receive a master's in social work from Atlanta University and an Ed.D. in guidance and educational psychology from Indiana University; and WHEREAS, He had a distinguished career in higher education, serving as dean of the College of Education and professor at Grambling State University, dean of men and instructor of social science at Bishop College, director of Student Personnel and professor at Alcorn A&M University, coordinator of the Triple T Program at Texas Southern University, and visiting professor and research associate at the University of California; and WHEREAS, In 1980, Dr. Berry was named president of his alma mater, Jarvis Christian College; this much-admired leader contributed immeasurably to the development of the school, and during his eight-year tenure, he oversaw increased enrollment, expansion of the scholarship program, and numerous construction projects, including the J. N. Ervin Religion and Culture Center, two modern residence halls, and a 12-unit student/parent apartment complex; moreover, the college received full title to all assets held in trust, the ROTC program was established, and a joint program between Jarvis and St. John's University Law School was approved under his guidance; when he retired in 1988, he was named president emeritus of the college; and WHEREAS, A loving father, husband, and friend, Charles Berry will be deeply missed but his tireless devotion to the Jarvis community and the legacy of accomplishments that he leaves behind will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Charles A. Berry, Jr., and extend deepest sympathy to his family: to his wife, Sarah Berry; to his children, Charles Berry III and Monica Berry; to his sister, Lillian Berry Hester; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Charles A.
