R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A loving family and a host of friends celebrate the
life of Kenneth Rodger Hinckley of Austin, who passed away on April
12, 2006, at the age of 84; and
WHEREAS, Born in Fort Worth on August 8, 1921, Mr. Hinckley
was raised in Waco, Dallas, and Houston; after receiving his
diploma from San Jacinto High School in the Bayou City, he spent
three years in Alaska, taking on the responsibility for a placer
gold-mining operation established in Nome by his father, a
U.S. marshal in the Territory of Alaska; during the winters, he
attended the University of Alaska in Fairbanks; and
WHEREAS, Shortly after the United States entered World War
II, Mr. Hinckley joined the Army Air Corps; he served in the
military for nearly four years, with his last assignments taking
him to New Guinea and the Netherlands East Indies as a member of the
5th Air Force; and
WHEREAS, Honorably discharged, he continued his education at
The University of Texas, where he graduated with a bachelor of
business administration degree; Mr. Hinckley subsequently enjoyed
a distinguished 37-year career with Houston Lighting & Power
Company, attaining the office of group vice president of external
relations; and
WHEREAS, While handling the myriad demands of his corporate
post, this esteemed Texan also gave generously of his time and
talents to a number of civic groups, worthy causes, and industry
organizations; he was involved with Baylor College of Medicine, the
March of Dimes, the United Fund, Trees for Main Street, Clean
Houston, the Houston and East Texas Chambers of Commerce, the
Better Business Bureau, the Houston Convention Council, and Edison
Electric Institute; and
WHEREAS, In retirement, Mr. Hinckley moved with his wife,
June, to the Texas Hill Country, where they divided their time
between a lakeside home and a hilltop residence in Austin; on
numerous occasions, the couple traveled abroad with the Flying
Longhorns; a life member of the Texas Exes, Mr. Hinckley also took
advantage of lectures and continuing education programs at UT and
supported the school's athletic programs as a spectator and donor;
and
WHEREAS, A deeply admired role model for all who knew him, Ken
Hinckley embodied the best values of a generation that defended
freedom at tremendous personal cost and that built a stronger, more
prosperous society on the foundation laid by their forebears;
preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, he will forever
be remembered with warm affection by those whose hearts and lives he
touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Kenneth Rodger Hinckley and extend sincere sympathy to the members
of his family: to his children and their spouses, Carolyn Hinckley
Boyle and her husband, James G. Boyle, Nancy Neill, and William
Rodger Hinckley and his wife, Cyndi Brooks Hinckley; to his
grandchildren, Amanda Marie Boyle, Holliday Brooks Hinckley, and
Walter Rowdy Hinckley; and to his many other relatives and friends;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Kenneth
Rodger Hinckley.
