R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2006 marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Llano County, and this singular milestone offers an apt opportunity to reflect on the county's unique place in the history of the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, Situated in the green expanses of the Hill Country on the eastern part of the Edwards Plateau, Llano County was a hunting ground for the Tonkawa and Comanche tribes before the advent of European settlement; and WHEREAS, With the coming of pioneers in the 19th century, small towns like Whistleville and Bugscuffle began to spring up throughout the area, and Llano County was officially founded on February 1, 1856; and WHEREAS, The turmoil of the Civil War took its toll on the region, and growth was slow throughout the 1860s; and WHEREAS, In the postwar era, the county began to flourish, as evidenced by the appearance of the first bank, courthouse, and newspaper in Llano, the county seat; and WHEREAS, After a brief boom based on a wishful assessment of the area's iron-mining potential, Llano County found its true sources of 20th-century prosperity in farming, the granite industry, and ranching, which remains the county's economic mainstay; and WHEREAS, More recently, winemaking, feed processing, and the production of insecticide and commercial talc have taken their places in the county's commercial landscape; and WHEREAS, Throughout its rich and colorful history, Llano County's greatest natural asset has been its friendly and industrious inhabitants, and their warm hospitality has ensured the area's popularity with visitors from across the state and around the world; and WHEREAS, Tourists are also drawn by the county's storied past, and the courthouse, the jail, the Southern Hotel, and the Badu House are all listed in the National Register of Historic Places; and WHEREAS, While justifiably proud of their shared heritage, modern-day residents of Llano County also have their eyes firmly fixed on the future, and their common commitment to the continued advancement of the region is worthy of every Texan's praise and admiration; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the sesquicentennial of the founding of Llano County and extend to all its residents sincere best wishes for the future.
