R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The year 2006 marks the 150th anniversary of the
founding of Llano County, and this singular milestone offers an apt
opportunity to reflect on the county's unique place in the history
of the Lone Star State; and
WHEREAS, Situated in the green expanses of the Hill Country
on the eastern part of the Edwards Plateau, Llano County was a
hunting ground for the Tonkawa and Comanche tribes before the
advent of European settlement; and
WHEREAS, With the coming of pioneers in the 19th century,
small towns like Whistleville and Bugscuffle began to spring up
throughout the area, and Llano County was officially founded on
February 1, 1856; and
WHEREAS, The turmoil of the Civil War took its toll on the
region, and growth was slow throughout the 1860s; and
WHEREAS, In the postwar era, the county began to flourish, as
evidenced by the appearance of the first bank, courthouse, and
newspaper in Llano, the county seat; and
WHEREAS, After a brief boom based on a wishful assessment of
the area's iron-mining potential, Llano County found its true
sources of 20th-century prosperity in farming, the granite
industry, and ranching, which remains the county's economic
mainstay; and
WHEREAS, More recently, winemaking, feed processing, and the
production of insecticide and commercial talc have taken their
places in the county's commercial landscape; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its rich and colorful history, Llano
County's greatest natural asset has been its friendly and
industrious inhabitants, and their warm hospitality has ensured the
area's popularity with visitors from across the state and around
the world; and
WHEREAS, Tourists are also drawn by the county's storied
past, and the courthouse, the jail, the Southern Hotel, and the Badu
House are all listed in the National Register of Historic Places;
and
WHEREAS, While justifiably proud of their shared heritage,
modern-day residents of Llano County also have their eyes firmly
fixed on the future, and their common commitment to the continued
advancement of the region is worthy of every Texan's praise and
admiration; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the
sesquicentennial of the founding of Llano County and extend to all
its residents sincere best wishes for the future.
