H.R. No. 231


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, On February 25, 2006, the boys' swimming and diving team of Westlake High School in Austin won the University Interscholastic League Class 5A State Championship; and WHEREAS, The key to Westlake's state title was the excellent performances turned in by each member of the team: seniors Chuck Cassidy, Will Farr, Ross Irons, Harrison Reid, Scott Spann, and Andrew Wang, and juniors Kevin Swenson and David Zolno; seven individual swimmers in the Chaps' well-balanced lineup earned All-America honors, while six were named to the All-State first team; and WHEREAS, These talented swimmers and divers were groomed into a championship-caliber unit through the skilled guidance of head coach Isaac Grombacher and assistant coach Kathy O'Grady; and WHEREAS, In claiming the school's first state championship in the sport, the Westlake Chaps were paced by the blistering speed of the 200-yard medley relay team and the 200-yard freestyle relay team, both of which turned in the fastest times in the United States for those events; moreover, special recognition also goes to Scott Spann, who set a new Texas high school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and was named the best male swimmer at the state meet; and WHEREAS, For all of their hard work in the pool, the Westlake swimmers and divers also applied themselves in the classroom, and five team members earned academic All-America honors; and WHEREAS, Winning a state title requires an exceptional degree of ability along with an unparalleled desire to succeed, and this championship season will stand as a cherished memory for these young athletes and a source of pride for their fellow students and community supporters; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate the boys' swimming and diving team of Westlake High School on winning the UIL Class 5A State Championship and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
