R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The many friends and admirers of Zelma Smizer Dockery of Cameron were greatly saddened by her passing on July 27, 2005, at the age of 69, and we join them in mourning their loss; and WHEREAS, For many years an assistant dean of students for on-campus housing at The University of Texas at Austin, Ms. Dockery later worked as an aide at Ben Milam Elementary School after moving to Cameron; and WHEREAS, Her contributions to the community extended far beyond her professional life, and she was a valued member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, where she chaired the Pastor's Aid Committee, the O. J. Thomas Queen Committee, and the O. J. Thomas Scholarship Committee; moreover, she served her community of faith through her involvement in the Lincoln District Missionary Baptist Association of Texas as president of Mission I; and WHEREAS, A former president and Golden Heritage member of the local chapter of the NAACP, Ms. Dockery was active in the Yoe High Booster Club and was named Booster of the Year several times, and she also distinguished herself in the Milam County 4-H, receiving that group's Outstanding Leader Award; and WHEREAS, Other well-deserved honors for Ms. Dockery included the C. G. Jennings Civic Award, the O. J. Thomas "Bulldog" Award, and the Fredrica Chase Dodd Award for Community Service, and she was further honored as Central Texan of the Month by KCEN-TV; and WHEREAS, Although Zelma Dockery will long be missed, the pain of her passing may be tempered by the knowledge that hers was truly a life well lived, and her unique spirit will live on in the hearts of all those fortunate enough to have known her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Zelma Smizer Dockery and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her loved ones and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ms. Dockery.
