R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The concourse of the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex of the Dallas Independent School District has been named in honor of Goree Johnson, an assistant athletic director of the DISD; and WHEREAS, A highly successful former coach, Mr. Johnson began working with student athletes at O'Banion Junior High School in Garland; he later served as head coach at Garland High School, where his team rosters included future NBA player Ricky Pierce; Mr. Johnson subsequently joined the staff of Justin F. Kimball High School in Dallas, and during his tenure there he led the Knights to two consecutive state basketball championships, in 1996 and 1997; and WHEREAS, Honored by his peers on numerous occasions, Mr. Johnson was chosen in 1997 to coach the North team in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Basketball Game; and WHEREAS, Appointed to his present post in 1998, this esteemed Texan oversees all district athletic facilities, transportation and out-of-town housing for athletes, and training and professional development for coaches, in addition to coordinating the district's basketball and wrestling programs; and WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson and his wife, Diane, have four children, Alicia, Roderick, Royce, and Rodney, and seven grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Goree Johnson has given countless Dallas students a vision of what they can attain through perseverance and hard work, and it is a privilege to join in commending him for his immeasurable contributions to the youth of his city; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Goree Johnson on the naming of the concourse at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex in his honor and warmly commend him on his distinguished record of achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
