H.R. No. 288


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, St. Joseph African Methodist Episcopal Church in San Antonio marked its 55th anniversary on December 11, 2005; and WHEREAS, Founded on October 18, 1950, the congregation held its first service on November 5 of that year, with the Reverend O. W. Hodges presiding; the church building, purchased from Hackberry Street Methodist Church by Bishop Joseph Gomez, was officially dedicated on December 17, 1950; and WHEREAS, Through the years, members of St. Joseph have enjoyed the inspired teachings of a host of dedicated ministers; since 1993, the congregation has benefited from the spiritual guidance and leadership of the Reverend Marilyn Ladson Andrews, whose many contributions include renovations and additions to the physical plant, the creation of the Carol Shanklin Outreach Ministry, which is a special ministry for youth, and a radio ministry, the implementation of tutoring services, and the organization of a class leaders council, weekly Bible studies, and prayer meetings; and WHEREAS, United by their shared faith, members of St. Joseph A.M.E. Church have played a vital role in the San Antonio community for more than five decades, and it is indeed a pleasure to recognize this milestone in their institution's rich history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate the Reverend Marilyn Ladson Andrews and all those associated with St. Joseph African Methodist Episcopal Church on the 55th anniversary of the church's founding and extend to them best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
