79S31155 JHS-D By: McClendon H.R. No. 292R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The year 2005 marked the retirement of U.S. Army Chaplain Colonel Edward K. Maney, who concluded a distinguished career in the military that spanned 28 years; and WHEREAS, A San Antonio native and 1975 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Chaplain Maney served seven years as an officer in the air defense artillery before resigning his commission to pursue his seminary education; after receiving his master of divinity degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in December 1984, he returned to active duty in January 1985 at Fort Bliss; and WHEREAS, Beginning in July 2002, Chaplain Maney served as the installation chaplain of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Sam Houston; before assuming that post, he served with distinction as the command chaplain of the 19th Theater Support Command in Taegu, Korea, from June 2000 to July 2002; and WHEREAS, His sterling military career has included assignment in Germany as brigade chaplain for the 17th Field Artillery Brigade as well as a year of advanced civilian study at Princeton Theological Seminary before his assignment as a U.S. Army Command and General Staff College instructor; he received a master of theology degree in world religions and cultural foundations from Princeton University in June 1992 and was a subject-matter expert for the U.S. Army chaplaincy on world religions and cultural foundations; and WHEREAS, In August 1996, Chaplain Maney was selected by the army chief of chaplains to attend the division chaplain course and to act as a chaplaincy recruiting extender for the army chaplaincy; he later served as the military district of Washington deputy command chaplain and as senior army chaplain at Arlington National Cemetery; and WHEREAS, The recipient of a number of well-deserved honors during his career, Chaplain Maney has been awarded the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal; moreover, he has been named a life member of the Buffalo Soldiers Association, more formally known as the Ninth and Tenth (Horse) Cavalry Association; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Chaplain Maney enjoys the love and support of his wife, Linda, and the couple's three daughters, Miranda, Samantha, and Jordan Alexandra; a man whose strong faith, compassion, and experience have made a positive difference in the lives of countless soldiers over the course of his career, Chaplain Maney indeed merits special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Chaplain Edward K. Maney on his retirement from the U.S. Army and extend to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Chaplain Maney as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
