R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Memories of a life well lived may serve to comfort the loved ones of William D. Smedler of San Antonio, who passed away on December 8, 2005; and WHEREAS, A man of strong character and conviction, Bill Smedler enjoyed an outstanding 22-year career with the U.S. Air Force, serving his country from World War II until his retirement in 1967; and WHEREAS, Mr. Smedler's service-oriented personality later drew him to the Community Relations Service of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he successfully developed and implemented numerous minority programs that benefited countless citizens; and WHEREAS, This talented individual went on to work as a counseling psychiatrist with the U.S. Air Force, as a personnel management and labor relations specialist at the Air Force Personnel School at Gunter Air Force Station in Montgomery, Alabama, and as the chief labor and employee relations specialist at Howard Air Force Base in Panama; and WHEREAS, Active with St. Philips Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Mr. Smedler took on a number of leadership roles during his years of affiliation, including junior and senior warden; he also served as lay reader and chairman of the search committee and was a member of the guild, the choir, and Men of the Church; and WHEREAS, Mr. Smedler further distinguished himself as a longtime member of the Delta Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; he became a member in 1969 and served as president, vice president, and chairman of the 1989 General Convention and Project Alpha during his tenure; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Smedler enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Geraldine, with whom he shared many joyful times and cherished memories; and WHEREAS, Bill Smedler was a man of integrity and dedication, and although he will long be missed by all who were privileged to know him, he leaves behind a legacy to treasure for those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of William D. Smedler and extend sincere sympathy to his wife, Geraldine Smedler, and his family and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his wife and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of William D. Smedler.
