R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Alpha Tau Omega, the San Antonio chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., celebrated 75 years of service to the community in November 2005; and WHEREAS, Founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest Greek letter organization established by African American women in the United States; and WHEREAS, Members of the sorority's San Antonio chapter are committed to the goals and ideals of the organization's founders, including providing scholarships to cultivate high academic achievement and ethical standards, fostering civic responsibility, and engaging in volunteer service; and WHEREAS, For 35 years, Alpha Tau Omega has sponsored Roseville Apartments, an 88-unit complex for senior citizens and the disabled, and has provided assistance to its residents through the Alpha Tau Omega Senior Opportunity Service; moreover, the chapter has hosted and funded activities for organizations such as the Mahogany Brain Challenge, the Ivy Reading Academy, the Young Author's Program, Black Family Volunteer Day, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service, the Alpha Tau Omega Education Fund, Inc., and other educational and health initiatives; and WHEREAS, The women of Alpha Tau Omega have enriched the San Antonio community with their generous contributions to a wide array of programs and services, and it is indeed a pleasure to recognize them for their noteworthy endeavors; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor the members of the Alpha Tau Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., on the organization's 75 years of exceptional service in behalf of the community and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success and accomplishment; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the chapter as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
