R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For more than a century, the Ella Austin Community Center has provided services that offer hope and assistance to San Antonio residents in need; and WHEREAS, Named in honor of Ella Austin, who opened her heart and her home to orphaned African American children in the late 1800s, the center aims to bring about culturally diverse communities that are physically, mentally, socially, and economically healthy places for people to live to their maximum potential despite income, racial, and educational barriers; and WHEREAS, To that end, the Ella Austin Community Center offers a host of opportunities for area residents, positively affecting more than 10,000 individuals and families annually; programs available at the center encompass Early Childhood Development, providing child care and education for kids ranging in age from six weeks to 11 years; Precious Minds, New Connections, an eight-week parenting course; Youth and Family Services, offering in-school counseling, tutoring, and after-school and summer activities; Artists-in-the-Making, a program giving low-income middle school-age students instruction in drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture; Individual and Family Assistance, making emergency assistance available for families in crisis; Holiday Programs, offering families in need special holiday meals and presents; Seniors Program, providing several thousand nutritious meals monthly to homebound elderly residents; and the Volunteers Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, preparing free tax filings for low-income citizens; and WHEREAS, Since its founding, the Ella Austin Community Center has had a profound impact on the lives of countless San Antonio residents and the organization and its caring and compassionate staff are indeed deserving of special recognition for their continuing efforts in this regard; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend the Ella Austin Community Center for the many significant contributions it has made to area citizens; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the center as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
