H.R. No. 328


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Shawna Walsh, a fifth-grade teacher at Nadine Johnson Elementary School in Hutto, has earned a lasting place in the hearts of her students as a role model and hero; and WHEREAS, During lunch period on March 3, 2006, Ms. Walsh was in her classroom when one of her students, Vanessa Delgado, began waving her hands in the air signaling for help; realizing Vanessa was choking, Ms. Walsh quickly came to her aid and performed the Heimlich maneuver, a skill she had learned many years ago in CPR certification and lifeguard training; on her third attempt, Ms. Walsh succeeded in dislodging the ice cream blocking her student's airway, and Vanessa was finally able to breathe again; and WHEREAS, With her swift and confident response to a critical situation, Shawna Walsh succeeded in saving the life of a child, and this caring professional is indeed a source of tremendous pride and inspiration to her family, students, and community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commend Shawna Walsh for her compassionate and heroic actions and for providing a happy ending to this harrowing episode; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Walsh as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
