H.R. No. 368
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Members of Post Oak Island Lodge No. 181, AF&AM, in
Beaukiss are gathering on May 6, 2006, to celebrate the 150th
anniversary of their organization's founding; and
WHEREAS, The rich history of the lodge began with the
adoption of its charter on January 24, 1856, when the town of Post
Oak Island was one of a few burgeoning communities in Williamson
County; and
WHEREAS, In 1878, the organization moved its headquarters to
Sam Smith Springs, and it was there that the tradition began of
using the lodge not only as a meeting place for the Masons, but as a
public venue for the members of the community; town meetings were
held in the facility, and the first floor of the building housed a
school, which by 1898 had reached an enrollment of 92 students; and
WHEREAS, The present lodge was erected in Beaukiss in 1900,
and members hosted their first meeting there on June 24, 1901;
during the first half of the century, the facility served as the hub
of the small community, accommodating the Masons as well as a
general store and a post office; and
WHEREAS, One of only two buildings remaining in Beaukiss
today, the lodge continues to welcome its members for monthly
meetings, carrying on an important tradition of service that has
remained a constant in the lives of many Central Texans since its
founding; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate the members of
Post Oak Island Lodge No. 181, AF&AM, on the 150th anniversary of
the founding of their organization and extend to them warmest best
wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of the lodge as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
