R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Jim Julian, a 71-year-old Houston resident, claimed a gold medal in pole vaulting at the 2005 USA Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Hawaii, clearing 7 feet, 10-1/2 inches in his final vault of the Men's 70-74 Division; and WHEREAS, Mr. Julian began vaulting just six years ago, at the age of 65, and since that time he has won numerous events on the local and state levels; his achievements in pole vaulting are all the more impressive given the fact that he overcame colon cancer in his late 50s; and WHEREAS, A veteran of the real estate business, Mr. Julian is a three-time Texas Senior Olympics champion and has become a true force in his sport; he has cleared heights up to 8 feet, 3 inches during practice; and WHEREAS, Jim Julian is a source of inspiration to his family and friends, and his success in the pole vault demonstrates that for those with talent and determination, athletic excellence knows no age; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Jim Julian on his gold medal win in the pole vault at the 2005 USA Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships and commend him for his numerous accomplishments in his sport; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Julian as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
