R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Barbara B. Yarbrough of Midland has earned the 2006 Jefferson Award for Public Service in recognition of her history of outstanding work within the community; and WHEREAS, An educator for more than four decades, Ms. Yarbrough graduated from Texas Southern University and soon began her teaching career at Carver Junior-Senior High School in Midland; she taught a number of grade levels before discovering that her passion lay in working with sixth-graders; and WHEREAS, Ms. Yarbrough retired from her position at South Elementary in 1996; she later returned to the school to serve as parent liaison and her efforts led to the establishment of the Barbara B. Yarbrough Parent Center; and WHEREAS, This notable facility has offered parenting classes and information regarding shaken baby syndrome, sudden infant death syndrome, child development, and child abuse prevention to more than 5,000 area residents; Ms. Yarbrough devotes much of her time to writing curriculum, teaching life-skills classes, and raising funds for the center, and her efforts have benefited the lives of countless individuals; and WHEREAS, She has also generously given of her talents to a host of organizations, including Camp Fire, Midland YMCA, the Midland County Child Welfare Board, Junior Achievement, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Artwalk of Midland, and United Way of Midland; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Ms. Yarbrough has exemplified leadership infused with compassion, generosity, and resolve, and she has truly earned the lasting affection of her students and esteem of her fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Barbara B. Yarbrough on earning the 2006 Jefferson Award for Public Service and commend her for her many contributions in behalf of the citizens of Midland; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Yarbrough as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
