H.R. No. 441
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Shirley Hunter has endured 20 years of public
service with her husband, Representative Bob Hunter, beginning in
August 1986 to this very year; and
WHEREAS, She was born in College Station on April 17, 1933,
and lived in Austin, where she was graduated from The University of
Texas with a degree in elementary education in 1954; and
WHEREAS, She is the daughter of the late U.T. professor of
engineering Wayne E. Long and his loving wife, the former Edna
Hopper; and
WHEREAS, She and Bob were married in Bangkok, Thailand, where
her father was teaching at the Chulalongkorn University, in a
wedding ceremony conducted by a Baptist missionary from Baylor
University and attended by many Thai dignitaries, the Diplomatic
Corps, and military officials, including the commanding general of
all U.S. military forces in Thailand; and
WHEREAS, The happy couple spent the early years of their
marriage in Japan, where LTJG Hunter was serving in the U.S. Navy,
and in Washington, D.C., where they completed his military duty in
the Naval Security Service; and
WHEREAS, They began their lifelong service together at
Abilene Christian University, in September 1956, where Bob
continues to serve in his 50th year at the university; and
WHEREAS, Their first child, Kent Hunter, was born on December
8, 1956, their daughter, Carole, was born on March 16, 1959, and
their son, Les, was born on August 6, 1964; and
WHEREAS, They now have four grandchildren: Landon, Chad, and
Emily Phillips of Colleyville, Texas, and Dino Sebastian Hunter of
Pasadena, California; and
WHEREAS, Shirley and Bob are proud to have a son-in-law,
Danny Phillips of Colleyville, Texas, and a daughter-in-law,
Carolyn Brunetto of Pasadena, California; and
WHEREAS, Shirley has volunteered in many community
activities in Abilene, including the Grace Museum, the Women for
ACU Organization, the Abilene Public Library, the Abilene
Zoological Society, and Meals on Wheels, Plus, where she and her
friend Mrs. Gary (Nancy) Thompson have delivered meals on wheels
every Monday for more than 15 years; and
WHEREAS, She has dutifully attended countless breakfasts,
luncheons, and dinners in addition to untold public events and
activities during the past 20 years in support of her husband's
public service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Shirley Hunter for
her many achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for
continued success and happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mrs. Hunter, her children, and her grandchildren as an
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
