R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Herbert H. Richardson of Bryan-College Station
is retiring from a distinguished career as director of the Texas
Transportation Institute and as associate vice chancellor for
engineering and regents professor in The Texas A&M University
System; and
WHEREAS, Since joining the TAMU system in 1984, Dr.
Richardson has contributed greatly to the engineering program;
under his leadership, Texas A&M was awarded the Offshore Technology
Center, a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center,
and both competitive grants and endowments increased considerably;
and
WHEREAS, This esteemed professional served for two years as
chancellor of The Texas A&M University System before taking the
helm of TTI, the largest university-affiliated transportation
research organization in the country, in 1993; in the years since
then, TTI has become home to nine national research centers and
garnered millions of dollars in funding from state, federal, and
private sponsors; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Richardson earned his bachelor's and master's
degrees at Colby College in Maine and his doctoral degree from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all in the field of
mechanical engineering; after serving for a time with the U.S. Army
at the Ballistics Research Laboratory, he returned to MIT, where he
eventually became associate dean of the College of Engineering; in
addition, he was chief scientist of the U.S. Department of
Transportation for two years; and
WHEREAS, Widely recognized for his accomplishments, Dr.
Richardson has received a host of honors, including election to the
National Academy of Engineering, the Rufus Oldenburger Medal, the
Centennial Medal, and the Benjamin Garver Lamme Medal, to name but a
few; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his rich and accomplished career,
Herbert Richardson has earned the lasting respect and admiration of
his colleagues and students for his leadership, dedication, and
scholarship, and his legacy of excellence will not soon be
forgotten; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Dr. Herbert H.
Richardson on the occasion of his retirement as director of the
Texas Transportation Institute and associate vice chancellor for
engineering and regents professor for The Texas A&M University
System and extend to him deep appreciation for his exemplary public
service; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Richardson as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
