R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Longtime Longhorn baseball coach Cliff Gustafson has been selected for the inaugural class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, and his induction into this unique sports shrine is indeed fitting, given his myriad contributions to college athletics; and WHEREAS, Head coach at The University of Texas at Austin from 1968 to 1996, "Coach Gus" guided the Longhorns to an impressive 1,466-377 record and two national titles in his 29 seasons at the helm of the school's baseball program; moreover, his 472-151 conference record included a remarkable 22 Southwest Conference titles; and WHEREAS, Named National Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1983, the Kenedy, Texas, native coached 133 All-Southwest Conference players, including nine SWC Players of the Year; his teams featured six Academic All-Americans, 35 first-team All-Americans, 12 second-team All-Americans, and nine third-team All-Americans; and WHEREAS, Coach Gustafson's roots with UT date back to 1952, when he played for the Longhorns on the Southwest Conference championship team that advanced to the NCAA College World Series; his coaching career also includes 14 seasons as head coach at South San Antonio High School and an astonishing seven Texas high school championship crowns; and WHEREAS, A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Coach Gustafson richly deserves his induction into the newly established College Baseball Hall of Fame; his record of success and achievement speaks for itself, and his impact on college baseball cannot be overstated; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Coach Cliff Gustafson on his selection to the inaugural class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame and commend him for his exemplary career as a coach and mentor for countless student–athletes at The University of Texas at Austin; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Coach Gustafson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
