R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Longtime Mineola educator Clarice Walters Evans was honored by her fellow citizens and former students on January 21, 2006, as she celebrated her 90th birthday in the Magnolia Room at the Mineola Civic Center; and WHEREAS, Born in Provo, Arkansas, on January 22, 1916, Mrs. Evans began teaching 6th grade in Mineola in 1956 and continued in that role for 30 years; after retiring from teaching in 1986, this vibrant lady went on to serve as supervisor of student teachers at The University of Texas at Tyler for the next 13 years; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Evans holds a bachelor's degree in education from Henderson State Teacher's College and taught public school for eight years in Arkansas before operating a private kindergarten in the family home from 1951 to 1956; she earned a master of education degree in 1968 from East Texas State University, and her career as an educator spanned an incredible 56 years; and WHEREAS, Blessed with four children, Mrs. Evans was married to Clarence Raymond Evans, Sr., from 1939 until his passing in 2003; her children are Clarence Raymond Evans, Jr., and his wife, Sandra Jane, Susan Bartley and her husband, Joe, Charles Walters Evans and his wife, Lydia, and Fred Henry Evans and his wife, Andra; a proud and devoted grandmother, she has 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Evans's dedication to teaching extends to her church, as well; she taught first-grade Sunday school from 1951 until 1987 at First Baptist Church, where she has been a member for 55 years; she sang in the church choir from 1965 to 1999 and has been an active member of the 20th Century Club since 1957, serving as president, vice president, and secretary during her tenure with the study group; and WHEREAS, An esteemed member of the Mineola community, she volunteered with the Mineola Youth Foundation for 25 years, served as president of the Mineola Public Library for two terms, spent a decade as a cub scout den mother, and was a girl scout assistant troop leader for two years; it's no wonder that she was named Woman of the Year by the Mineola Chamber of Commerce in 1978; and WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Clarice Evans has demonstrated great pride and determination, from graduating as class salutatorian in 1933 to volunteering at the First Baptist Church food pantry and the Mineola Library in the 21st century, and the occasion of her 90th birthday has provided a fitting opportunity to recognize this remarkable woman for her myriad contributions to the welfare of her fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Clarice Walters Evans on the celebration of her 90th birthday and extend to her best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Evans as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
