R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Streetman are celebrating the 100th
anniversary of this East Texas town in 2006, providing an ideal time
to reflect on its first century of existence; and
WHEREAS, Straddling the Freestone and Navarro County line,
the community dates back to 1905, when it was established as a
station on the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway; named for Judge
Sam Streetman of Houston, a railroad surveyor, the town began to be
settled in 1906; and
WHEREAS, By the time of its incorporation eight years later,
Streetman boasted a population of 600, a post office, a newspaper, a
dry goods store, two cotton gins, three churches, a lumberyard, two
blacksmith shops, several other businesses, and a school; and
WHEREAS, Over the next 10 decades, Streetman has weathered
many changes and challenges, and today area Texans may take
justifiable pride in this community and in the unique contributions
it has made to the history of the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate the citizens
of Streetman on the 100th anniversary of the founding of their
community and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future.
