R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Hershell H. Nixon of Houston has distinguished himself as a man of science, a respected author of both fiction and nonfiction, and a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and it is indeed fitting to recognize his many accomplishments; and WHEREAS, A native of Duncan, Oklahoma, Mr. Nixon was born on August 4, 1923, the fourth of six children; and WHEREAS, He served in the U.S. Navy as a quartermaster on the USS Iowa, the USS Pokomoke, and the USS Topeka; and WHEREAS, Two days after his 26th birthday, he married Joan Lowery, and the couple moved to Texas, where they enjoyed a union that was blessed with a large and loving family that eventually grew to include their children, Kathleen Marie Brush, Maureen Louise Quinlan, Joseph Michael Nixon, and Eileen Marie McGowan, and their grandchildren, Melia Brush, Nicole Brush, Veronica Brush, Brian Quinlan, Michael Quinlan, Sean Quinlan, Andrew Quinlan, Bridget Quinlan, Timothy Quinlan, Nicholas Nixon, Stewart Nixon, Matthew Nixon, and Katherine Joan McGowan; and WHEREAS, A geologist, Mr. Nixon was trained at the University of Southern California and worked in this demanding field for four decades; and WHEREAS, Like his wife, an award-winning novelist, Mr. Nixon is a talented writer, and with her he authored five children's books on earth science; and WHEREAS, At the age of 80, Mr. Nixon broke new artistic ground for himself with the publication of a novel, The Long Way West, for which he won the Western Heritage Award from the Western Writers of America and was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Mr. Nixon's own story is that of a life well lived, and as its happy protagonist he may rightly take pride and satisfaction in his many and varied achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Hershell H. Nixon and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Nixon as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
