H.R. No. 471


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends are celebrating the life of Bennye Carol Frazier of San Antonio, who passed away on April 10, 2006, at the age of 76; and WHEREAS, Born in Johnson City on March 18, 1930, Mrs. Frazier earned a bachelor's degree from Incarnate Word College and a master's in educational psychology and guidance and counseling from The University of Texas at San Antonio; and WHEREAS, A skilled and dedicated teacher, she worked with at-risk students enrolled in Coordinated Vocational Academic Education Cooperative; during a career that spanned nearly 30 years, she taught at Churchill and Lanier High Schools; and WHEREAS, Held in the highest regard by her colleagues, she became the first woman to serve as state president of the Texas Industrial Vocational Association, an organization composed overwhelmingly of men, and she also served two terms as president of the San Antonio Teachers Council; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Frazier played an active role in the community, leading the San Antonio Calligraphers Guild for two years and devoting significant time and energy to groups concerned with heritage preservation; she served as president of the San Antonio Schools Archives Association, which has worked to preserve the history of education in San Antonio, and as president of the Harp and Shamrock Society, a group devoted to the celebration of Irish culture and Irish contributions to Texas; she also belonged to the San Antonio Conservation Society and served as paper chair of A Night in Old San Antonio; and WHEREAS, A stalwart of the Bexar County Democratic Party, Mrs. Frazier held the offices of chairman, secretary, and treasurer in that organization and also served on the State Democratic Executive Committee; over the years she helped numerous candidates, in races at every level, and in 2000 she cofounded a political action committee by the name of Wise Ol' Women (WOW); and WHEREAS, Bennye Frazier brought to her many endeavors an unfailing integrity, purposefulness, and generosity of spirit that won her the affection and esteem of countless fellow citizens, and her memory will be forever cherished by all who were privileged to share in the richness of her life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Bennye Carol Frazier and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her husband of 50 years, Tom Frazier; to her children, Ricks Frazier and his wife, Rita, Joe Frazier and his wife, Mia, Julie Alexander and her husband, Ron, and Erin Burnett and her husband, Wayne; to her grandchildren, Nicholas Frazier, Kevin Frazier, Justin and Meaghan Alexander, Stephanie and Amanda Anderson, Kirstin Burnett, and Mathew, Kamala, and Kameryn Frazier; to her great-grandson, Hunter Wilson Meadows; to her brother, Howard Bennett Edgeworth, Jr., and his wife, Katy; and to her many other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bennye Carol Frazier.
